Engine Mechanical problem
2006 Volkswagen GTI 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual +100K miles

Sirs,

I am getting my car serviced as we speak. It all started when my engine was making this high pitched whistling noise. The mechanic said he replaced the:

timing belt

water pump

krank field

camshaft field

tensioner for timing belt

idler for timing belt

17 valve

coolant

entire clutch

He is charging me $1,400

Keep in mind the warranty was over after 50K miles and I had never had the car serviced and it has +101K miles. I only change the oil whenever it was due.

is $1,400 sound right to you?

he said it would easily be $2,000 at the dealership.

This guy changed my brakes for $160 before. And they work just fine.

I Work for a VW dealer as a tech. A timing belt service with water pump, tensioner and roller and new coolant is usually a $1200.00-$1400.00 repair. Never heard of a Krank field or camshaft field? And what 17 valves? Valves in the cylinder head? And if hes doing the Whole clutch for transmission that alone is another $1000.00 repair possibly more. So if you trust this guy who is working on it, sounds like it is cheaper than dealer. So if you know and think he does good work then sounds good. Let me know if any other questions.
