Electrical problem
1996 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

My sons golf has one Brake light socket with power. This model has two bulbs each side and a rear window brake light.I am stumped as to why one bulb would work. The chiltons manual I have has no wire diagram for brake lights.I verified grounds are good.I did find no power to four locations(this includes the window light).I ran a continuity check from one powerless location to back of fuse box and have continuity.

Check your turn signal circuit, the brake signal typically runs through the stop lamp switch and into the the turn signal switch and then into the bulbs. It is unusual but possible that a short in the turn signal could kill the brake lights.

Having continuity to the fuse box is odd though, was this with the stop lam p switch activated? I would hope so because if not then your switch is probably melted and causing continuous current to the lamps and probably burning them out rather quickly.
