Transmission problem
1995 Volkswagen Golf Two Wheel Drive Manual 102000 miles

I have a VW Golf 2.0l. It keeps jumping out of reverse gear. It has also not been driven for a while and now has the occasional smell of burning rubber when trying to pull off. Can you please tell me if I need a new gearbox or clutch?
thank you

Usually if the trans is jumping out of gear its a gearbox failure. It might be as simple as low fluid, so have it checked and topped off.
A worn clutch will make it hard to shift into gear, slip, and can create a burning smell.

A worn clutch will make it hard to shift into gear. This may appear to be popping out of gear, but just not completely engaged when shifted. The clutch could also be slipping and causing the burning smell.
