1989 Volkswagen Golf engine stalling/cuttingout

Hi had my car about 3 month but only drove it once due to this problem the problem is every time I tried to put my foot down to get up to speed it cuts out and sumtimes wont start again for around five minutes this also happens while trying to drive uphill I have talked to alot of people about this and im still non the wiser no one seems to know what cud cause this its the 1.8 carb version sits a idle no problems can sit and rev it up no problems the problem seems to occur around 40mph or on any incline

Presume its petrol not diesel car.
Fuel starvation?
Check fuel filter and pressure

Hi cheers for the input, u were exactly right its been fixed a couple of days now, as it was someone had added a second filter on the fuel line because of dirt being draged through but they had placed it on a part of the fuel line wich made it sit horizontal so it was only ever half filled with fuel so every time car rose up with acceleration air was dragged in to the line shud be gettin new fuel tank to top dirt problems all solved cheers
