1998 Volkswagen Beetle CAR TROUBLE

My car is very hesitant to go I will give it gas to go and it takes it a few sec to register oh I need to go I think it may be the fuel filter but not sure please help also this morning I got in it and cranked it up and it died well then I cranked it again and gave it gas and kept giving it gas and it stayed cranked but it was still hesitant to keep running and I had alot of smoke come out of it dont know what to do please help thanks J

Do u have check engine light on and if so you need to have it scanned for codes

Yes my check Engine light is on but it has been on since I bought it 2 yrs ago and it is just now giving me thses problems

You should have it scanned for codes
local part store will do it for free
for you
check with them
and let me know of them codes

are u loosing any fluids like oil or coolant
is it over heating

No Nothing is leaking that is why I think it is the fuel filter

Fuel filter is possible but if you can get the codes that will help to pin point the trouble area
also possible mass air flow sensor
