Engine Mechanical problem
1974 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive

I have a 1974 super beetle and as I was driving the gen. Belt broke. I continued to drive it so I could try and get it home. I got home, replaced the belt and it won't start now. When I stopped I had a lot of smoke coming out of the engine compartment. It sounds like I'm not getting any compression. Can you tell me what possible damage I may have caused driving my bug with no belt. Thanks.

The belt also runs the engine fan behind the generator inside the shroud. If you drove very far, the engine must have overheated. It could very well lack compression, most likely because an exhaust valve has burned or stuck open in its bore.
