1972 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have two manuals with conflicting info. The "official 'VW manual says rotate cw to tdc.(Rotor to notch in dist. Rim, notch in pulley lined up w/seam in crankcase), adjust #1 valves, rotate ccw 90 deg to #2, adjust #2 valves, ccw 90 deg, adjust #3, ccw 90 deg, adjust #4. Valves set at.006 like everyone recommends. John Muir's book, "Volkswagon repair for the compleat idiot" says cw to tdc adjust #1, ccw 180 deg, do #2, ccw 180 deg #3, ccw 180 deg, #4. Using the first method, the car started but won't run or rev. Muir's method, one valve is still partially open when I get to #2. I figure I am perhaps missing something or doing something stupid. I can do anythhing to a small block Chevy but my wife's beloved bug kicks my butt every time I try to do anything to it. Thanks, Paul P

I would adjust them like any other adjustable valves. Make sure the temp is what it should be or close and make sure the valves that you are adjusting are both closed and adjust them and move to the next, or use the VW version as it is right.
