1972 Volkswagen Beetle front crankshaft oil seal change?

do you have to split the cases to change the front crankshaft oil seal? Or just remove the pully and remove the seal?

I seem to recall this engine doesn't have a seal, per se, but what they call an oil slinger, essentially a washer. I didn't remember whether you have to split the case, but this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zya3rvTRyjg

shows pretty clearly it sits in a groove in the case, so, yes, you'd have to spit the case. Now that I look back on this, I wonder how that even retains oil pressure? One of the bug's many wonders.
