This has never happened before, but the fumes are so strong that my clothing smelled of gasoline when I got out of the car after a shopping trip. I've looked under the car, all over the interior and can't see anything amiss. The car is running perfectly as always. The fumes are so strong it's a if a container is open in the car.

Can be a leak so slight that it evaporates before you see it. This can be anywhere in the fuel system so you need to have it looked at thoroughly. It is probably somewhere in the engine compartment such as carb area.

Except I opened the engine compartment and it didn't smell at all. What is so accessible to the interior to make it smell like the gas is actually there? Could it be the gas gauge? The little wire that goes from the tank to the instrument panel?

Hmm. It may be leaking from the exhaust, but that would be around the intake so I am not sure if you checked that out or not.

Well, I'm going to take it in this week or the next so they can put it on a lift. It is really weird. Thank you for answering so quickly.
