We can’t start the car. The battery in the key fob was replaced a few months ago and we’ve had no problems. All of a sudden, we can’t start - lights come on, but we get a warning that says, ‘check vehicle protection system’. We had done all sorts of locking and unlocking, from inside/outside, we have disconnected the battery for 5 minutes. We have held the lock button down…We have called Fiat and they tell us to get the car towed to them!

Hello,

Is your vehicle equipped with a start/stop button? see image below.
If so, try holding the key fob directly at the button and press the button using the key fob.

A good video:

How good is the vehicle 12V battery? A weak battery could cause issues with the immobilizer system.

A good guide:

Perhaps try a jumper battery, see if this changes anything:

The message "check vehicle protection system" usually points towards a possible failure of the Fiat Code (immobilizer) system and should be diagnosed using a suitable diagnostic tool.
I suggest trying and read the fault memory and post the fault codes here so we can evaluate and advise.
