Engine Cooling problem
1993 Vauxhall Astra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 45.000 miles

Hi there, the other day driving on the motorway I noticed the engine's temperature going right up to 120 degress! I was desperate and pulled out on the first safe place I could find. It was lack of water and since then I have to top it up everyday. Cant find the leak. So then my husband and I noticed the bonnet inside is full of water marks. Is it possible that the water compartment's lid is loose so the water/coolant is evaporating through there when I am driving? And in this case replacing the coolant compartment would do the job? We cant think of anything else. Thanks for helping.

Hi there,

You will have to get the cooling system pressure tested. This will help locate any external coolant leaks, I would also have the engine tested for a head gasket problem as well.

Hi mark,

thanks a lot for that. I have already asked my husband to do it.
