Driving home, vehicle idling was intermittent even while stopped. RPM's ranged from 1000 RPM to 3500 RPM's without touching the gas. Most lights on the instrument panel were lit and both the power steering system and breaking system were gradually losing power, In had to put the vehicle in neutral in order to engage the breaks.

I will give it a try today. Would this also cause the breaks and steering to lose power?

Yes it cold esepecially when the engine is going high rpm it would seem like you arelosing brakes but you aren't because engine is trying to go fast steering wold be screwy at lower rpms so check belt and tensioner recommended replacement is 60k for both
