I normally do all my repairs myself but, being a female I'm just not strong enough sometimes. I also didnt feel I had enough experience to tackle replacing a engine alone. I ended up hiring a "friend" who does this kind of thing to replace my engine. The second time I drove my car it popped a p0016. It made since because that is a 2 trip code. He assured me he got the timing right and told me to check the wiring and sensors. I changed both sensors and started checking the wiring. This is when I found his botched jb weld repair. He somehow broke the upper oil pan. There is supposed to be a tab where there is now a bunch of jb weld. I didn't tell him that I found it in hopes of getting him to come by so I could find out what was really going on but surprise he's now nowhere to be found. Honestly I don't want him anywhere near my car again and he doesn't have the money to do anything about it anyways. So now I'm stuck in the middle of January trying to fix this all myself. So my question is, can I remove the upper pan in the car or do I have to drop the subframe and pull the motor? Do I have to worry about anything messing up anything else while doing it? I'm so frustrated I really don't have the extra money right now for any other expenses. I already had to put out another $120.00 for the upper pan. It turns out the code was because he got the timing off 1 tooth on cam 2. After finding his other careless work I wasn't surprised. I can't believe I was dumb enough to trust him in the first place. I never trust anyone to work in my car cause everytime I do this kind of thing happens. Anyways, thanks in advance. Any help is appreciated.

Can you take a look at this exploded view and let me know what you are referring too when you say upper oil pan?

I included the process from the manual on how to remove the oil pump which appears it can be done while in the vehicle because it does not tell you to remove the engine. This means, I suspect you can do the oil pan in the vehicle. I have never done this on this specific engine but you can normally do this on these engines in the vehicle. Let us know what other info that you need. Thanks

Sometimes it's listed as upper oil pan, here it is listed as stiffening or crankcase assy.

Oh. Got it. I have only ever done those with the engine on an engine stand. The manual will not list it in any other section then the disassembly portion. So unfortunately it looks like it will need to come back out. I looked online to see if there were any videos of anyone doing this in the vehicle and I could only find it shown on people rebuilding the engine. Sorry.
