Took it in and got is scanned, they said the turbo was not working properly (something was being kept open in the turbo). I kept driving for a couple of days and the light went out and the turbo is functioning again. I drove the car hard to see if I could get the light to come on to no avail. I have heard it could of just been a piece of carbon jamming the gate. Not sure if I should replace the turbo. Heading out on a big trip and I don't want to have any turbo issues or do any damage.

Hello,

This sounds to me like your vehicle's waste-gate might have got stuck open. The waste-gate is the part that diverts the exhaust gas from the manifold to the turn the compressor wheel and the input shaft. If it is working properly now, it should be okay, all though I would keep an eye on it. In the diagrams down below I have included an exploded diagram of the turbo and the waste-gate system as well as parts callouts for you to get a better understanding of what is actually going on inside the turbo itself. Please keep us informed of how things go, and if you need our help, please don't hesitate to ask. It's why we are here.

Thanks,
Alex
