Trunk lid not closing?

My convertible top goes up and down as it should. The windows work as they should. But when I lower the top, the trunk lid will not close, and when I raise the top, everything works as it should, except trunk lid will not close. I unhook the negative battery cable on the fender well, turn on the headlights to drain the system, wait only a couple minutes, turn the lights off, reconnect the negative cable, start the car, and the truck lid will close as it should every time. I only have an inexpensive OBD11 scanner, so that is no help. There are no codes showing. It just states convertible top in operation. I hear whining coming from the trunk area when the trunk lid should be closing, but nothing happens. Once I do the negative cable trick, the lid will close every time. I am sure unhooking the negative cable is resetting something, but what is it resetting is my problem. Could it be the header motor, or the trunk latch switch? I'm 72 years old battling cancer, so if this is not an easy fix, I will sell it. Thank you for your time and of course all of your help.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles. It is likely caused by the convertible top control module (CTCM) getting stuck in a logic fault or “waiting” state until the battery power is cycled until the fault happens again. To be sure we should have a CAN scan done this video we show you what I am talking about:

If the trunk latch switch has dirty contacts, it will not signal the module to close. This is why you hear the whining. I would also check the hydraulic fluid in the system as well and add any if it i low. Here is how, also the switch is located at the center rear of the trunk lid. Check out the images (below). Please upload pictures or videos in your response.

This is too complicated for me at this stage in my life. I will try to find someone that has a scanner you speak of and doesn't want a fortune to take a look. I thought that unhooking the battery reset something, I just didn't know what. Everyone keeps saying it is the header motor, and that it also has a limiter switch. CAN scan, here I come. Thanks, and I will be in touch as soon as I have more info to tell you.

Hello. I'm back. I couldn't find anyone other than a dealer to scan my car. I did install an ignition cut out unit, so I don't need to keep going under the hood each time to lower or raise the trunk lid. New information! I have found that sometimes I can shake the wires running along the passenger side hinge, and it will work as should. So I'm guessing I need all the wires running inside the corrugated insulation checked. It still works fine after I cut off the power for a few minutes also.

So do you mean you shake the wires under the hood or trunk lid? Either way this is a wiring issue. You will need a wiring harness or some one to chase the wires. Here is a wiring diagram for the system and a guide to help test the wires so you can see what needs to be done. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

It is the wires that run along the hinge in trunk on passenger side. There seems to be many, so this is outside my ability being the way my health is. I'm thinking that there is only a few that deal with the lowering of the trunk lid, but only a guess. I will check out what you sent me. Thanks, take care, Happy Independence Day, and I will be in touch.

Okay, I have looked at the diagrams that you sent me, and I have no idea where to go from here. I am not electric savy, and even if I was, my health would not let me do what needs to be done it seems. As I stated, I have wiggled the wires along the hinge on the passenger side in the trunk, and sometimes the trunk lid will work as it should then. I'm thinking those wires need to be probed to see where the break is. I was hoping it would be something simple, and it probably is to someone who knows what they are doing. It is probably only one wire. The one that deals with the lowering of the trunk lid. It still works as it should if I kill the battery for a few minutes, and then turn it back on. At this point I am thinking seriously about selling it. I want to thank you for all of your help. If I find a money tree, and then a mechanic that will look at it that knows what they are doing, I will most definitely let you know. I still think it is only one wire, but this is only a guess. Thanks again.

Yep, happy 4th! Yep, it sounds like you have a break in the wire or a lose ground wire. The harness will need to be checked. It would be nice if I could fix it for you but I am in computer land :/
