Transmission works - Shifter cable does not?

Stopped went to put the suburban into park from 3rd gear. When I did this the column shifter moved up and down freely without moving the gear indicator out of 3rd. I continued forward to the driveway and parked it, still stayed in 3rd. Trailer button turned on dash light, 4x4 knob still engaged and disengaged 4x4. Set parking brake and turned engine off in 3rd. Now column shifter no longer moves at all and suburban will not start because transmission is in 3rd instead of Park.

Yep, it sounds like the shift cable has broken, it happens. To confirm go under the vehicle and watch the cable action at the transmission selector shaft while having a helper move the shifter handle to help confirm the failure.
