gasket is leaking was told that the motor has to be dropped in order to get it replaced. I am not sure i am getting the straight scope.

Hi,
To the best of my knowledge, you don't have to do anything like that. The only thing that may be a little in the way is the cross member.
As far as the job, I attached the directions below for servicing the transmission. Since you are going to remove the pan, it is a good time to replace the filter also. The directions indicate draining the torque converter and flushing the cooling lines. Unless there is an issue or extremely dirty fluid, I wouldn't be too worried about that.
Additionally, at the end of the directions, it says to start with five quarts of fluid for the refill. That is for a dry system. If you don't drain the converter, I would start around 3.5 or 4 quarts.
