In cold weather last week tried to open the rear gate with the manual latch on the rear exterior. Has had some give in the past, but heard a "snap" and it obviously wont open now. The rear handle has some spotted rust, and its likely road spray has deteriorated a cable connection or something in the door opening assembly.

Need to use the rear gate for obvious family and normal vehicle use. Is it easy to repair on my own, or how much should it cost at a shop?

Had the same thing on my 2003 Sequoia. I had to reach up into the hole beside the latch handle and get ahold of the cable that runs down to the latch. If you can get ahold of it and pull it it should unlatch the tail gate. Then once you get the door open you have to access the inside of the door through the interior panel in order to get to the latch assembly to replace. I will see If I can find diagrams and post.
