When starting from a dead stop in 1st it seems my clutch will grab so much that it will almost stall my engine unless I let off the gas completely as I ease out the clutch petal at just the right time, the truck will have to be rolling just a little at this point, then the truck lurches forward and rattle real hard. It seems to drive fine in the others gears once the cars is moving and dose not see to suffer from a slipping clutch, or jerking motions, and the transmission seems to be fine. I have plenty of power through the gears. I've driven lots of manual cars and this is the first where I have to let off the gas completely as I let off the clutch. It seems really sensitive. If I where to treat it like a normal manual transmission, with conservative treatment, the engine rattle violently and will stall when putting it into gear.

Hi daniel_davis,

Thank you for the donation.

It seems like you are having a problem with the acceleration rather than the clutch.

The engine could be misfiring while taking off resulting in the harsh jerk. Possible causes are spark plugs and cable problems.

If your engine is carburetted, you need to check the carb accelerating pump. If it is not pumping enough gas while taking off, it would result in the jerk.

OK, well I'll try that out as there seems to be an issue with the accelerating pump, but is does rev up with ease in neutral, It's when up under load by the clutch from a dead stand still that the thing will jerk really hard and almost die if I don't let of the gas at the same time as the clutch. I've never own a carbureted truck car before so this is a new problem for me. If its the accelerator pump would this mean that it's having problems under load? When I step on the gas in 2nd it does sputter a bit and jerk. Do they sell rebuild kits for the accelerator pumps?
THanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes, when accelerating pumps don't work well, the tend to jerk mainly under load. Neutral reving of engine might be insignificant to note.

Carb rebuild kits should be available.

Remember to check the spark plug cables as well. A continuity and resistance test would show if the cables are ok. Bad cables would result in the symptoms you describe as well.
