Wheel problem

I have been trying to remove the tire from my car to change the brakes, but the wheel seems stuck to the axle. I've tried hitting it the tire from the back with a mallet but it won't budge. Any suggestions how I can remove the tire?

Try using a baseball bat (or something longer then 4-5' that you can hit the tire flat with) also spray some wd40 or PB Blaster into the lugnut holes, and around the edge of where the wheel goes on the car.
