I have a 93' 4 cylinderToyota Camary SLE with a little over 70,000 miles on it. My alternator has stopped working and I have a friend that owns a 1985 Toyota Camary that just sits in his driveway because it needs a new transmission and he really has no use for it. Can I use an alternator from a 85' for a 93'??
I do not have the money to buy a new or rebuilt alternator this is why I was wondering they were compatiable.

I doubt they are the same. Been a while since I have seen an 85 Camry. The belt that drives the 93 is probably a flat polyrib type, the 85 could be the older V style. The 93 alternator will probably put out more current too. Eyeball them and compare every connector, mounting scheme, etc. The time you spend experimenting with this could add up. You may want to work some overtime and get the correct part. Make sure your battery is good. A weak battery will make the alternator charge at full output too long and could burn out the regulator.
