Engine Cooling problem
1997 Other Toyota Models Two Wheel Drive Automatic 160000 miles

I currently have a problem with my toyota lucida emina, when driving around town or on idle it is all ok and the temp gauge stays in the middle but as soon as I put my foot down and the coolant needs to be circulated the temp gauge goes up and down.
Any suggestions please.

Check the thermostat and test the coolant temperature sensor.

Check the radiator for clogging and water pump operation.

Feel the front of the radiator for cold spot-it should be warm across.

Water pump

Test the water pump- squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad. The other cause might be a bad thermostat that is not opening properly (remove and inspect the thermostat), or a clogged radiator.
