Hi
I own a Toyota Carina e and when I start the engine I get a rattle from the front exhaust around the manifold section.
I have been told this could be the heatsink but have no idea what this is.
Can you help.
The noise reduces when the engine is hot
Thank's

Hi.

I own a taxi company in Ireland and the Toyota Carina 1997 was one of the biggest fleet cars due to its realibility. I have one myself and never had a problem with it. However, I can relate to the difficulty you are encountering. Its like a 'pinking' sound when speeding up which is normally associated with poor fuel or a badly timed engine.
The problem is Toyota, from day one from the factory. It is indeed the connection from the very lower part of the manifold and the exhause at the front of the engine underneath. The only way to eliminate this noice is to have that section taken apart and have the parts welded back together again. I have had two colleagues who have done this and the noise is well gone. My own car makes the same noise but I am not bothered with it.
So there you have it, your car is perfect, but the noise can be annoying if your are car conscience.
Hope this is if some assistance to you,
Kind regards,
Martin.
IRELAND.

Heatsink is just the heat resistant metal shield that protects the other components from the heat of the exhaust system.
