Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Other Toyota Models Automatic 90,000 miles

Hello, I have a 1997 Toyota Ipsum. Last week my serpentine belt went out and I had it towed to a mechanic to have him put a new replacement on. (I have no access to any tools right now. I living in Japan for a few months). Upon inspecting the car he tells me the wheel that runs to the timing belt was bent from the serpentine belt breaking and needed to be replaced. Apparently this is called the harmonic balancer. After ordering the harmonic balancer ($265) and proceeding to install it, he now tells me that when the balancer bent, it was attached to the timing belt on the other end, and the timing belt sliipped. He says there is a 50/50 chance now that even if he fixes the belt and replaces the balancer, the engine may have no compression. Due to the fact a few of the pistons probably "slammed" bending the rods. I looked up the engine in my car. It's a 3S-FE engine. I'm not sure if this is a non-interfence engine or not? Could I have bent a few rods withy my timing belt slipping? Do you think I should pay the 4-5 hours of labor and the $265 for the balancer. The car was driven about 400 yards after the belt broke. Any help would be appreciated.

Everything I found on this engine says it's a NON-INTERFERENCE engine so he's wrong there. I also find it very suspicious to say a serpentine belt took out a harmonic balancer or anything behind the cover. I won't go as far as saying it's impossible but I've never seen it happen. I would be getting a second opinion as I have never seen a serpentine belt damage a harmonic balancer and a timing belt, I feel that there is something not quite right going on here.
