2001 Toyota Echo loud pop and flash

While driving on the highway my car made two loud popping sounds and with each pop a flash of light could be seen under the car. Do you have any idea what this could be? Is it safe to drive?

If you see no smoke associated with it, then it is an electrical problem as opposed to a fuel backfire.

In any case, it is not safe to drive, have towed to Toyota or trusted garage.
