a/c usually works fine, but occasionally, after resting in hot sun, refuses to work. A day later, works fine again.
Any idea what could cause this odd behavior.

Intermittent problems are very difficult to diagnose.

The fact that is does this after sitting in hot sun (windows rolled up, I assume), may indicate the switch in the cabin is getting so hot that it is failing to make contact.

To test this let it sit in hot sun, turn AC on, if compressor clutch does not engauge, then I would suspect the switch in cabin.
