Noises problem
2006 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Automatic 14000 miles

This started a few weeks ago as the weather started to get colder.

On cold mornings, my car starts making a noise (I'd describe it as a grinding sound, I guess) when I shift it from park into reverse. On ~30-35 degree mornings, when I shift from reverse into drive, the noise goes away; on colder mornings, the noise continues while I'm in drive and is especially loud when I'm cruising or breaking and gets quieter / goes away as I accelerate. Once the engine warms up, the noise stops.

What do you think this could be? How potentially serious is it, and how do you recommend I proceed?

Does it make the noise if you are at a stop?
Does it sound differently when you are moving?

Is it a light tinny sound?
Or does it make a deeper grinding sound?

It does make the noise when I am at a stop (unless the car is in neutral). When I am moving, and especially when I am accelerating, the noise grows softer.

I would describe it as a deeper grinding or popping sound, not a light tinny sound.

Of course I am using you to be my sense of sight, sound and touch. I have to depend on what you are picking up on.

I'm leaning towards a problem with the pump in the transmission, or the torque converter.

A check up at a transmission shop might be prudent.
Call them before and and explain the problem, they may want you to leave your car overnight so they can "cold" start it in the morning.

I notice you are low miles and only 3 years old.
Do you have any warranty left?
