Hi there,

The airbag system is what is known as the SRS. Supplementary Restraint System, it is activated with decleromoters that are independent of the seat belts, some SRS systems have seatbelt pre tensioner that is when in an accident the seatbelt will tension up and help restrain the person further, always wear the seat belt, it is the primary restraint system that will save your life.

Great advice by Mark. Relying totally on SRS will most likely cause injury.
ALWAYS wear seatbelt.
