Electrical problem
1994 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello,

My speedometer will only work some of the time. Most of the time the speedometer jumps to about 35mph when the car starts moving and will stay there until the car comes to a complete stop and the speedometer falls to zero. Also, the speedometer will slowly fall to zero from 35mph when the car accelerates from 50mph-65mph or so. The speedometer shows 0mph at speeds above 65mph.

I replaced the VSS to no avail. The problem remains exactly the same. I checked the contacts on the VSS plug and they look fine. The only thing is that the speedometer seems to work fine for a period when the plug is removed and put back in (regardless of whether the battery was connected or not when the plug was removed), but this affect is only temporary.

Any Ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If VSS is good then it very well could be the gauge.

You will most likely have to replace the entire IP.

That's what I was afraid of.
Before I run out and buy a "new" IP do you know how to check the wiring from the VSS all the way to the speedo? I have a basic multimeter but I don't really know where to hook it up. I supposed I have to be driving the car to get readings as well?

Yes driving, the VSS output should increase with speed.
