Dear Car Repair DreamTeam,

the tail brake lights on my 1991 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon stay ON all the time. The brakes seem to work fine and there is no resistance from them when driving, but the tail brake lights are both ON always. Eventually of course if I do not disconnect the battery the lights drain the battery out.

Why do both of the tail brake lights stay on? I know the wiring is direct, does not go through the starter, but what should I do to fix this?

Thanks. MK

Are the tailights staying on or are the brakelights staying on? If the taillights are staying on are the headlights on also or is any of the illumination on(like if you were to have the headlights on)?

Check the brake switch on the pedal. There is a plastic piece the switch comes in contact with, these tend to break over the years causing the switch to be out of adjustment. You can readjust the switch to compensate.
