Tires and Wheels problem
1991 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

I drive a toyota corolla XL wagon, 1991 model. It uses leaf spring at the back and the shocks are automatic, I have used two set of back tires in less than two months and this is not supposed to be so. The tires wear quickly and i noticed that when ever i am driving and i drive into a small pothold or over a stone the two back tires sway to the side and i lfeel the car shifts too. Please what could be the cause of this? Please write back.

so do you think it has nothing to do with the leaf spring? I checked the two shock absorbers and i found out that when i exert a force on them one is working well and the other when pressed down it doesn't return to its normal position. Is it advisable to use a fairly used shocks? most new parts here are china inferior products, so they don't tend to last as compared to the used ones. Please i need your response and if there is any materials you can help me out with i will be extremely grateful. Thanks again

How are you doing and how is work going for you? Please i would like to ask if it is possible to change the leaf spring and the axle attached to it to a spiral spring type. Please i would like to know if this is possible? But the limitation is that they will have to drill holes and weld for this to work. Please i will like your advice on this? What are they positive and negative effects? Please reply?

Have rear inspected for broken leaf brackets, but it sure sounds like a welded bracket or suspension component has failed.

Could be a leaf spring problem, you would have to inspect the rear. It is possible a leaf is broken, or a U bolt is loose, broken.

If you have access to a junk yard there, it would be your best resource for used parts, and generally Toyota parts last a long time.

If you can't find any good used parts, you will have to get new ones.

Where I live, 1991 wagon parts are extremely rare, but sedan parts are generally easy to find.

If you are asking that you want to change the leaf springs to coil springs or coilovers?
It is possible, but unless you can find a conversion kit, I would be a bit dubious, it would take a lot of fabrication and would have to be perfectly aligned.

This conversion would most likely cost a LOT of money.
