1989 Toyota Corolla Rumbling noise upon turning engine off.

Occasionally upon turning the engine off, rumbling sounds and vibrations occur for a few seconds, which seem to be coming from either the motor itself or the intake manifold. To me it sounds very much like backfire, though its hard to pinpoint the exact location of the noise.

Start by checking the mechanical timing. Is this a carb. Engine or FI?

Yes, Carb. This happens occasionally, especially during cold temps.

More than likely there is carbon build-up in combustion chambers causing "run-on".

You could rebuild the carb. And that should help, also take off the intake and clean it thouroughly. Also try some fuel system cleaner.
