I have a 89 toyota corolla and when I crank it up everyday for the first time it smokes abd sometimes shuts off. There is gas aroung the left side of the head gasket what could be the problem

Hi there,

If the smoke is bluish, this is more than likely faulty valve stem seals in the cylinder head. The as you have not given any engine info, I will presume it is a carby engine, as this is the most likely thing that will be leaking fuel, have it checked asap, as it is a fife hazard.

As Mark said, we need to know if it is a carb engine or FI. It says "16V EFI" on the valve cover it is a 4AFE.
The 4AFE requires a special tool set to change valve seals, but as Mark said leaking fuel is the immediate problem.
