1990 Toyota Celica RPMs not registering

I just bought my first car, 1990 Celica GT, the engine runs great. The RPMs don't register, once it has been running for a good while, it will start to move, but only to about 500rpm. My manual show nothing of the tach. Could you suggest some things to check?

The double check all the connections on the ignition coil
