To repair or not?

1994 Toyota Camry LE 4 cyl Automatic. 147,500 miles.

Last week the car over heated. There is oil in the radiator and anti-freeze in the crank case. The mechanic I took it to suspects a blown head gasket, but he hasn't disassembled it yet. He doesn't feel that repairing it is a good idea and has suggested that we junk it. The car has some dents but has been running pretty well for my daughter, who usually drives it.

There are three other mechanical issues that concern me.

1) The ABS warning light comes on intermiitently. It seems to me that when it IS on, the ABS is not operating correctly.

2) The Power Steering doesn't seem to be working correctly (very difficult to turn the wheel).

3) The car has been losing a lot of oil in the last several weeks.

All of these items were to be examined this week but that was pre-overheat (Why my daughter didn't bring this stuff to my attention earlier is evidence of my lost hair!).

Anyway, I am inclined to go along with the mechanic as I have no way of knowing what the ABS and power steering problems might be, but I hate to trash a car that might be repairable and last a few more years.

Please comment on how I might determine exactly what will be needed repair wise without redoing the head gasket and discovering I still need $1,000 work beyond that.

Thanks

By the way, I apologize if this is a duplicate. This is my second attempt at writing to you. I had previewed my earlier note and made a donation (you're welcome!) And I was unable to recover the first note.

Have seen many Camry's go way farther than 147k, but if you arent wanting to drop the money, then another might be the right choice for you. This repair will get pricey if the head needs to be replaced (cracked), if it was over-heated that severly, then there is most likely damage to the bottom end as well. Its up to you, paynents or repairs.
