If one rear strut is defective is it necessary to replace both rear struts

It is best to replace struts in pairs. You not only change the feel, but you also change the ride height. If one strut is used and the other is new, that new one is going to make the car higher on that side. But if you are strapped for cash, then you gotta do what you gotta do.
