Hi,

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry- 4 cyl with 172k miles. I am looking to get the timing belt changed. Had the timing belt and water pump last done around 97k miles.

I will have friend do the work to save money. I know there are two drive belts (a/c, alt and power steering), the timing belt, and water pump that I need to get. I also understand there is a tensioner pulley and idler pulley? That I need as well. My question is what else do I need? I want to make sure I have a all inclusive, comprehensive job done and don't want to miss anything. Also can you ball park the parts cost and what the labor hours should be (even thoug a friend is doing it I want to have an idea of the hours). Should I get the parts from the dealer or would Kragen or Pepe Boys be just as good?

Thanks in advance.

Labor is around 3.5-4.0 hours.

PArts are going to vary and you'll need to do a little homework with the sources you have. Personally, I use NAPA for most of my parts, but if you go with dealer or name brands such as dayco or gates, you should be fine.

Do check the dealer as sometimes parts can be comparable. You'll need to have your VIN when you call them.

Be sure to get a new, not reman waterpump. You'll need a timing cover gasket and should check both the cam and crankshaft seals for leakage. Do not replace if they are not.

There are kits available too, that are less than all the parts individually.
