Last night i stopped my car and put it in park..felt it go loose...tranny is in park....shift on console is totally loose no engagement?

Check the cable at the trans. it may have come loose or the retaining clip broke, or bracket at trans. broke.
Hold down bracket in the console may have broken.
Inspect the cable connection at the trans. first and retaining clip.

The cable to the tran was off, so the retaining clip broke
The mechanic wants to replace the cable and clips

The only reason you would replace the cable is if the cable is bad or the place where the clip holds it in place is worn, otherwise, replace the clip.
I would have him inspect the motor mounts, see if there is excessive movement, that caused the cable clip to fail.
