1998 Toyota Camry intermittent surging in motor

intermittent problem motor surges doesnt cut out. runs rough on idol when this happens . can restart and run fine again . when this surging begins i can smell a rotten egg smell or sulpher smell . sometimes the intermittent problem happens after i have been driving at 100 kms hour so its when i go down to a lower speed . it still seems to accelerate ok . is this fuel , plugs . imjectors ? mechanics cant seem to give me the answer

Need to start by checking for codes
I would suspect a tune up and or o2 sensor
codes will help
