I recently took my car in to the shop to replace a broken lug stud and patch a flat tire. The car was running great and I had never had any trouble with the ABS or trac/off sensors or systems. When I picked the car up, within 30 seconds of driving it on a flat, smooth road, the ABS light and trac/off light came on and flashed. The ABS light now comes on every time within 30 seconds of me driving and stays on until I turn the car off. The trac/off light also comes on every time within 30 seconds of driving and continues to flash until I turn the car off.

Is it possible that the ABS or wheel speed sensors or the ABS system could have been damaged in the process of removing the brake caliper and rotor while replacing the lug stud? I would love to know any of your thoughts on how this could happen and what I might look for to determine whether the shop is responsible. They claim it is a coincidence.

Hi chris. Cox,

Thank you for the donation.

I would sugggest retrieving the trouble codes to understand what is causing the ABS light to come on.

It is possible the repair carried out had caused the problem but without understanding the trouble code, we would not be able to determine if the shop is at fault.

Just so I understand correctly, they have not looked at the car to see if it could be their responsibility

While coincidental things certainly happen, The shop at the very least should have pulled the codes and determined which wheel the fault is occuring at.

If it is that wheel, then the harness should be looked at as well as the sensor for possible damage.

First thing that is needed is to find out the codes and the source of the problem before attempting to address blame.

It won't look good if it is the same wheel, but I would not expect damage to happen doing a wheel stud. Having said that, there are unskilled techs out there.

So yes it is possible, but I would not jump to that until the source is uncovered.
