How serious is a cracked valve cover and what is your best estimate on replacement/repair? Thanks.

Internal engine works with proper vacuum and pressure. Cracked valve cover will interfere with the optimum conditions required by the engine. As results, you may have terrible idle and possibly during driving, increase fuel consumption, to say the least. You will also allow environmental contaminants (water vapor, dust, etc) to get into the engine. All these contaminants will affect the internal parts of the engine, and may be worse.

As old as the vehicle is, you may find a set of decent covers at the wrecking for reasonable price. If you have a shop to install they will charge 2.7 hours of labor to do both, 0.5 hours for bank 2 (by the radiator), or 2.4 hours for bank 1 (firewall side). You need to furnish them with a set of valve cover gasket about $20.
