1991 Toyota Carmry, 177000 miles, 5-speed manual transmission.

Two noises I'm curious about:

1) When I release the clutch and apply power in 1st gear, there is a deep CLUNK noise from the engine compartment and a sharp pop vibration coming thru the firewall. Sometimes this happens in 2nd gear, too. This just started. Which part do you think is causing the noise?

2) When I make a sharp turn, as into a parking space, there is a click-click-click sound coming from what sounds like the front wheels. The car has made this noise for 10 years. Any idea what part makes this noise.

Thanks for you help!

Sounds like the CV avles are worn out. A difficult job for the DIY er, But it can be done if you have the right tools. You can pick these axles up at your local parts store remanufactured for about $60.00 each. You will need to return the old ones to get your core deposit back. Hope this helps.
