Have a 2001 toyota avalon, recently 2 codes pop on, p0440 and p0442, tried to erase 1 time, but comes back on again in a couple days. P0440(EVAP Emission Control Syatem Malfunction) appear as code of 1 and 2 for the total of 3 codes found. Which means it appeared repeated as I scroll down the 3 codes. The last code is p0442(EVAP Emission Control System Lead, SMALL). Can anyone machanic help me to pin point this problem? Thank you very much!

Hello -

I have attached the troubleshooting chart for this. As you see the big thing is the fuel cap either improperly installed or cracked or leaking in some way.

My suggestion is look at all the hoses etc really well for cracks, damage, chaffing, good tight connections.

Then purchase a new fuel cap

Clear the codes and see how it does. If it comes back the we do some more troubleshooting.

Hello -

Hey one more thing..... Looks like you may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.
