2000 Toyota Avalon timing belt

2000 Toyota Avalon 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 46,760 miles

After taking my car in for an oil change I was told I should have the timing belt changed along with the water pump and front seal. At a total of $794.95. I was shocked. I only have 46,760 miles on my car and it is protected in a garage all of the time. It is an expense I can not afford at this time. When I questioned the need, citing the low mileage, I was told it is based on mileage or age of vehicle. Am I being fooled into spending money that I don't have?

No, the manufacturer suggests this based on time/ mileage due to the fact that it is rubbe rand time/heat/stress will cause cracks in the belt which weakens it, just like the drive belts on the front of the engine, if they sit for a long time, they crack. I dont think you are in the urgent time frame, but start saving for it
