Greetings,
I own a '96 4runner, 4wd, 4 cylinder, with 198 km.
Recently, in the mornings, the back brakes have started to grab just after I stop at the first stop sign and start up again.I back out of my laneway.
The brakes are original.
At first, it was just after a rain, now it happens more often, but mostly in the morning.
It is loud and wakes me up pronto!
It is usually fine for the rest of the day.

Here is the cause. ( I had the same problem on a car)

brake linings absorb a little moisture over night and have a high friction coeffiecent but the real culprit is the backing plate is worn where the edge of the brake shoe contacts the backing plate. They sit on small raised pads.

It will have a groove that will cause the shoes to jump and jam against the drum

The cure.

. Replace the backing plates

or the cheap fix

. Grind the contact pads on the backing plate smooth
. Do not remove too much material!

Safety first!. If in doubt throw it out

When installing or
changing shoes put a smear of high temp lithum grease on the backing palte contact pads.
