Toyota says I threw a rod and need a new engine. Had car towed from MA to CT to my mechanic. He says he doesn't see any holes in the block and will try to crank it manually. What does this actually mean and will I need a new engine?

Hi rpearlberg,

The phrase " threw a rod " means the one of the picton connecting-rod has failed and when this occurs, the rod might break through the engine walls causing a big hole.

Under such circumstances, you would need a new engine, at least a short block, meaning the lower part of the engine.

If the damage does not affect the engine block, a rebuild with replacement of the crankshaft and piston with connecting-rods plus other related parts can be done.
