2000 Toyota 4Runner first gear

My 2000 4runner has been great to me, no problems. However, I have begun to notice that when I put the car into drive the car seems to stuck between neutral and drive (like the emergency break is on, but not) the car "drives" but doesnt really take off until it reaches second gear. This doesnt happen all the time, just sporadically.
