1997 Toyota 4Runner timing belt

Just replaced timing belt, water pump, and new tensioner pulley. All timing marks line up on cam pulleys and crank pulley and crank gear. At tdc I get normal compression on number 1 cylinder. Motor starts relectantly when it will but soon stalls with a strong smell of gas in the exhaust. If you think it is the timing, how do you adjust, or is there something I'm missing. Thank you

First make sure timing marks are all in line see pic below. Then get a timing light and check timing. Use second pic below to make the jumper wire shown and then start the truck and check timing should be 8-12 btdc. Let me know how it goes. You adjust it with the distributor.

My engine is a efi 3400 4 cam v-6. All timing marks are aligned on the cams and crank. You told me to adjust the timing using the distributor. I don't think this engine has a distributor. How do you adjust the timing.

Sorry your right you don't adjust it but you do check it to see if it is correct. Let me know what the timing is and we will go from there. You did check the cams to make sure that they are correctly aligned? See pic below.
