Steering problem
1991 Toyota 4Runner 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 181000 miles

On a four wheel drive run I blew a seal on the power steering gear box. I still have power steering, but it leaks and I hate the mess.

What are the steps I need to follow in replacing the power steering gear box? Anything I should watch out for while doing this? Or, is it possible to replace the seals in my existing gear box?

Hi Bartyco,

It is possible to replace the leaking seal. For the worm wheel steering box, there is only 1 seal at the lower steering arm that usually leaks.

It is not easy to replace unless you have the necessary tools, main one being a universal puller to get the arm off.

Remember to check for wear on the seal seats on shaft.

Nothing special to note while removing or installing the gear box except be careful with the pipes, don't get them cross threaded when installiing.
