Engine backfires and the belt squeals

Starts and runs, sometimes backfires and the belt squeals often. Not entirely sure what the problem is.

Good morning my name is Roy and I will assist.

Backfiring means spark when it was not called for. Check all you ignition components first. That is, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. While the plugs are out, do a compression test to verify the engine is good and it will also tell if you have a timing chain issue.
